Flames, Heat, Refreshed for Phoenix Battle
The Townsville Heat and Flames are determined to start their three-game home stand with a win over the visiting Sunshine Coast Phoenix this Saturday night.
Both Townsville teams sit at 3-3 for the year, after splitting their Logan Thunder/Ipswich Force road double two weeks ago.
The Heat had their hearts broken when a miracle buzzer beater from ex-NBA star Lamar Patterson sunk them in their last start loss to Ipswich, but in-form power forward Kuany Kuany said his team are primed to bounce back.
“We're not going to dwell on it,” Kuany said.
“We’ve already watched the film with coach, we know the mistakes that we made, and we're going to come back better than ever.
“As a team our focus has been on fixing up our mistakes, making sure we finish off games, and just getting ready.
“Coming off that bye week, everyone's rested, and we can’t wait to take on Sunny Coast this week.”
A squad member of the NBL championship winning Illawarra Hawks, Kuany has starred for the Heat in his debut NBL1 North season and is top 10 in the league for points per game (23.2, 9th) and rebounds (10.6, 3rd).
The Flames head into Saturday’s clash against the Phoenix women’s team well-rested and captain Harriet Carey said the team is confident they can put together their first win streak of the year.
“The first game of that last road double was a really hard loss, we just weren't gelling as a team and it was just very uncharacteristic loss for us,” Carey said.
“Logan is a very good team, but we weren’t really playing in our style.
“So I think to come back the next game and get the win, showed a lot of resilience and we can really build on that as a team.
Carey is playing her first season back in her hometown after a great college career in Windsor, Canada and is expecting a tough battle against a deep Sunshine Coast team.
“They have a very good point guard in Erin Bollmann, so stopping her is going to be key,” Carey said.
“And then have some good post players plus a deep bench. It’s going to be a battle across all four quarters and we’re ready for that challenge.”
The Flames are up first at Carmichael Ford Stadium on Saturday night at 6pm before the Heat game at 8pm, with tickets available on the door.
