introducing the cedar gara bursary program

Every season our NBL1 players get the opportunity to wear a special uniform that we auction off with the proceeds to go to a charity. For this year in a collaborative discussion with some of the coaches, staff and players, a new initiative being created by Townsville Basketball.

Townsville Basketball will use the funds raised through the auction of the Gujuda Gulumbulah uniforms to create a bursary for disadvantage Indigenous Youths to be able to afford to play the game at Townsville Basketball. The bursary will be used to offset registration and/or game fees so that we can expose our game to as many prospective ballers as possible. Townsville Basketball will work with representatives from Indigenous Basketball Australia and Basketball Queensland to establish the guidelines for application before our Summer Season tips off in October.

The naming of the bursary is to recognise three of the greatest indigenous players to ever wear the Townsville Basketball colours and contribute to the game in our community in Michael Cedar, Chris Cedar and Velma Gara.

On Saturday night at our First Nations Round match we raised over $10,000 in the auction of six playing singlets, now the rest of them are up for grabs to support this cause.

All of the singlets went up for auction today on eBay and will run through until Sunday so get in quick to bid for the one you are after.
